The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is getting a sequel

by

Paramount Pictures and Sega have announced that a sequel to the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is in development.

The sequel will retain the same team of filmmakers, with Jeff Fowler directing, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller penning the script. It’s still in early development, but will certainly look to build on the characters and cast found in the first film.

It’s no surprise, when Sonic the Hedgehog was a big hit at the box office. The film sprinted past the previous record for an opening weekend, set last year by Detective Pikachu, managing to overcome an extensive delay and redevelopment to be a success. It’s currently grossed over $300 million worldwide, making it the second biggest film of the year behind Bad Boys for Life, and given that cinemas are currently shut down during the pandemic and film studios are delaying many of their big budget films to the end of this year or 2021, Sonic looks set to be sitting pretty in the top ten by the end of this year, and will doubtless rake in more cash with an early digital release.

The film sees Sonic, voiced by Ben Schwartz, making a new life for himself on Earth. After setting off an EMP pulse that knocks out power across a large part of North America, the US government puts Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik on his tail, forcing Sonic to make a new best friend in Tom, played by James Marsden, and road trip across America. It doesn’t really make too much sense, but then it’s a video game movie for kids.

We reviewed it on its cinematic debut, calling it “A solid, fun and watchable family film, Sonic The Hedgehog doesn’t always hang together, but it does at least do justice to one of gaming’s most iconic characters.”

That’s a big achievement considering where the film was last year. At that point, Sonic was all set to be a movie disaster to rival Super Mario Bros. After a first trailer was released in May, there was a huge fan backlash against the original design of Sonic, which was meant to be “realistic”. Thankfully for the film, the film was delayed so that Sonic could be redesigned, this being revealed in November. Alongside the VFX team Sonic Mania Adventures director Tyson Hesse was brought in to bring the character’s design closer to the games.

What a world we live in where Sonic’s gone from human-teethed horror to box office success on the way to blockbusting cinema franchise status.
