Newcastle fans react as Joelinton comments on difficult first campaign

Joelinton has told Goal’s Brazilian outlet that he is determined to improve on his difficult first season in English football with Newcasrle United – and Toon supporters have defended their club-record signing.

The 23-year-old was handed the iconic number nine shirt at Newcastle last summer after a huge £40million (Guardian) move from Hoffenheim. But after 29 Premier League outings this season, he has scored only one goal.

It is another blot on the book of Lee Charnley, who pushed for the signing despite Rafa Benitez’s concerns. Given that Joelinton was a left winger at Hoffenheim, it is hardly a surprise that he has struggled in his first Premier League campaign up front.

However, there have been glimpses of quality. His form in the FA Cup – albeit against lesser opposition – has caught the eye, scoring twice and laying on two assists in five games. He commented on his first season, discussing his bad form.

“For any striker, going a while without scoring is bad, it leaves us with great anxiety,” Joelinton said. “But I think it’s part of this beginning of trajectory in English football, and I’m not used to being shaken by a bad moment.

“I seek strength to train, improve and return to the games to score goals and help Newcastle win. We always have to improve. It’s a league with great teams, excellent players and coaches. The level is very high. I’m prepared for this.”

Newcastle’s reportedly imminent takeover could see Joelinton lose his place in the team, with a whole host of attacking talent linked with the club. Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain have both been suggested as striker targets.

Newcastle supporters have reacted on Twitter to Joelinton’s comments and although the striker has come in for plenty of criticism, many have defended their South American forward – even though his lack of goals is evident.
