Professor commits suicide in Shillong

A 34-year-old assistant professor of Indian Institute of Management – Shillong on Thursday allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence here in Meghalaya, a police official said on Friday.

Dr Arindam Mukhopadhyay, a native of Burnpur in West Bengal, joined IIM-Shillong in 2015 and had lived alone in a house rented by the B-school. Police said that Mukhopadhyay had allegedly sent a message to his eldest sister in Kolkata informing her about his intention to end his life. On receiving the message, Mukhopadhyay’s sister shared the same with the landlady, who later informed the police.

 “The police team rushed to the house but found that the door was latched from inside. They broke the door and found the teacher hanging inside,” Superintendent of Police (Shillong City), Bikram D. Marak said. Although, preliminary investigation indicates that it was purely a suicide case, police said that investigation is on to establish the exact cause of his death. Meanwhile, the body has been sent to North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences for autopsy. The parents of the deceased have arrived in Shillong for cremation rites.
