David Luiz’s future was sealed the moment he left Chelsea
by Hugo AmayaDavid Luiz’s career was always going to spiral downhill after he forced a move from Chelsea to Arsenal. The Gunners’ choice to not renew his contract is another sign that Chelsea did the right to let him go.
Before the start of the season, David Luiz had all of the chances in the world to remain at Chelsea. But, after reports of a falling out with Frank Lampard and his plans for the team, Luiz opted to move away. Even after being handed and unprecedented contract extension, Luiz decided a move to Arsenal was best.
However, a full season has passed and now the Gunners don’t seem interested in renewing his contract. This means Chelsea was right to let him go for having a poor attitude and lacking defensive abilities.
Luiz was favored by Maurizio Sarri last season, but the reasons behind such favoritism will never be understood as the Brazilian let the team down time and time again. Nevertheless, he ‘earned’ a contract extension, despite his age. This seemed more a gesture of respect for his historic contributions for the club and his seniority rather than his on-pitch performance. Yet, he opted to disrespect the manager and club by not adhering to the plans for the upcoming season.
The Brazilian decided he wanted to move to Arsenal and such poor character is now signifying why Arsenal doesn’t want to re-sign him. Despite getting what he wanted, Arsenal is now looking to replace Luiz by letting his contract expire. Chances are Chelsea would have had to do the same should Luiz have stayed. In that regard, Chelsea swindled some money from Arsenal, offloaded a seasoned player and promoted youth development.
Further, Chelsea was always better off letting Luiz leave. Putting aside his bad character and decision making, his defensive skills alone were enough to make the sale. Now, Arsenal has found out how his purchase was a piece of bad business and how much it has cost them when the team is desperate for money. Chelsea dodged a bullet, which, at some point, was unstoppable.
Unfortunately, there are not many places to turn to. After burning his bridges with Chelsea and failing at Arsenal to the point of being let go, Luiz does not have many big options left to turn to. Of course, any bottom-half team would take him without thinking twice, especially for free. However, he will surely demand high wages, which not everyone is ready to pay.
Ultimately, Chelsea did the right thing by selling Luizn The Blues did it ahead of time and they came out the better team when things were all said and done. Now, it is Arsenal and Luiz, who find themselves in unfavorable positions. At the end of the day, it all worked out for the Blues.
