How Maharashtra coped with COVID-19 in May

by

At the month of May, the COVID-19 outbreak only accelerated further in the state of Maharashtra. According to statistics from reports published by the Medical Education and Drugs Department (Maharashtra), the state witnessed the highest number of fresh cases as well as new deaths in a single day this month.

As India's curve gets steeper, Maharashtra's graph was categorised with large spikes followed by gradual falls when it came to new cases since April. For instance, on May 25, Maharashtra crossed the 3,000 mark followed by a drastic fall of 605 cases in the subsequent cases. But the dips were not sustained as soon after, the state witnessed another massive spike.

While the state in the past one month reported the highest number of deaths in a single day (97 deaths on May 27), the mortality rate has been on a steady decline from 3.77 per cent from earlier this month to 3.33 per cent on May 29. The death toll currently stands at 1,982.

Currently, Maharashtra has 38,939 active cases, out of which, 25,694 belong to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation alone. The corporation has consistently reported the highest number of cases, followed by the Pune Municipal Corporation. Towards the end of this month, reporting 2,000 fresh cases became the new normal.

It is also important to note, 18,616 have recovered so far. Interestingly, about 20.92 per cent of patients belong to the age group of 31-40 years. Back in April, a majority of the patients initially belonged to the age group of 21-30 years.
