Members of the Teater Ekamatra theatre troupe want to perform in your bedroom tonight.

A virtual performance of locally written plays read in Malay starts at 8pm and will continue June 26, July 24, and August 28. The program, called Baca Skrip (Script Reading), will feature actors reading scripts from their past performances, including Hantaran Buat Mangsa Lupa (Offerings for the Victims of Amnesia), which kicks the series off tonight.

The readings will be conducted via Zoom and tickets are available online for S$10. The group’s program is produced in collaboration with long-time theatre producer Fezhah Maznan and is a way to generate income for theatre workers left destitute by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The scripts that are read are selected based on their impact on the Singapore Malay theatre history and/or which are representative of the playwrights’ oeuvres of works. The scripts must have been performed before,” the group said in a news release.

Three stories related to Islamic history will be read in the first session by Apprentice actor Fir Rahman, dancer KayKay Nizam of the Fantastic Four Crew, as well as actors Mish’aal Syed Nasar, Izzul Irfan, and Shida Mahadi.

An unannounced “surprise guest” will join at the end of the readings to comment on the work.

Local playwright Irfan Kasban was behind Hantaran Buat Mangsa Lupa. Subsequent shows will feature scripts by playwrights Noor Effendy Ibrahim (Anak Melayu), Aidli Alin Mosbit (Ikan Cantik), and Alfian Sa’at (Causeway), respectively.
