A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a blaze at a Birmingham tower block.

Nearly a dozen residents were led to safety by crews after a blaze erupted in the communal area of the 14th floor of Humber Tower, off Francis Street, in Nechells, after 3am on Thursday (May 28).

Around 40 firefighters were at the scene at the height of the fire and residents in one half of the block were evacuated from their homes.

West Midlands Police said a 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Detective Inspector Dave Sproson said: “The incident was extremely frightening and lots of the residents were understandably very scared. The fire service did a brilliant job – and the vast majority of people have been able to return to their homes.

“Thankfully no one was seriously injured, but one man was sadly taken to hospital with respiratory issues caused by the smoke.

“The recent arrest is a great development in our investigation, but we’re still trying to piece together exactly what happened, and anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to us should get in touch.”

The Hazardous Area Response Team, two paramedic officers, a Tactical Commander, one ambulance and MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the incident.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “On arrival, crews were informed that a fire had started on the 14 floor of the 16-storey building, with fire colleagues working hard to evacuate residents and put out the blaze.

Once residents had been safely evacuated, ambulance crews assessed a total of eight patients who had suffered smoke inhalation. All were discharged at the scene and given advice to seek further medical advice if their condition worsens.”

All the residents returned to their homes except for the occupants of the affected flat.

A hydraulic platform was also deployed. Crews from Hay Mills, Ward End, Aston, Ladywood and Handsworth attended.
