Aston Villa finally have a date to resume their Premier League season.

Dean Smith and his players will return to action next month with the Premier League yesterday announcing its intention to restart on June 17.

Villa's game-in-hand against Sheffield United is due to be one of the first matches staged as part of Project Restart, meaning training preparations will now need to be stepped up at Bodymoor Heath.

The club currently sits 19th in the Premier League table, two points from safety, with 10 games to play.

The Premier League are confident of completing the final rounds of fixtures, but they are putting provisions in place in case the season has to be curtailed.

If the number of coronavirus cases across the UK increases it would likely end the Premier League, whether it's finished or not.

In that event the Premier League have agreed to use an unweighted points-per-game system to determine champions, European places and relegation, according to the Mirror.

The report states: "Clubs agreed that an unweighted points-per-game system would be used to decide the table if games are not completed.

"That is one of the reasons for the re-arranged fixtures to go first, a logical decision which chief executive Richard Masters had previously said made sense, getting all 20 clubs back on a level footing.

"The decision will need to be formalised and ratified by a vote at the next meeting, next Thursday."
