Premier League sets precedent for West Brom and Leeds promotion - reports

West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United, the Championship's top two, are eager to complete the campaign and win promotion

The Premier League have reportedly set a precedent for the Championship in the event of curtailment.

The top flight announced plans to restart their season on June 17 yesterday and the Championship are hoping to follow suit.

West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United, the division's top two, are eager to complete the campaign and win promotion.

It looks as though the Baggies and Leeds will get the chance to do so with plans to restart the campaign advancing by the day.

However, if the number of coronavirus cases across the UK increases once the season restarts then it's highly likely that it will be curtailed.

In that event the Premier League have agreed to use an unweighted points-per-game system to determine champions, European places and relegation, according to the Mirror.

The report states: "Clubs agreed that an unweighted points-per-game system would be used to decide the table if games are not completed.

"That is one of the reasons for the re-arranged fixtures to go first, a logical decision which chief executive Richard Masters had previously said made sense, getting all 20 clubs back on a level footing.

"The decision will need to be formalised and ratified by a vote at the next meeting, next Thursday."

Championship clubs are poised to be updated in the coming days on their own restart plans, but a similar points-per-game system is likely to be put forward to the 24 clubs.
