Here are the Liverpool morning headlines on Friday, May 29.
The free-to-air Merseyside derby
The Merseyside derby will be broadcast for free by Sky Sports when the Premier League returns.
It was announced yesterday (May 28) the English top-flight will restart next month and all remaining 92 matches will be shown live by Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport and Amazon Prime.
Aston Villa will take on Sheffield United and Manchester City will face Arsenal on June 17 and a full schedule of games will then be played over the weekend of June 19-21, including Liverpool’s trip to Goodison Park.
Sky Sports will broadcast 64 of the remaining 92 live matches - 25 of which will be aired on Freeview, including the derby - while the BBC have four live games, making it the first time the corporation has shown live top-flight football since 1992.
Carragher mocks Neville once again
Jamie Carragher posted a pointed message on Twitter aimed at former Manchester United counterpart and current Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville after the top-flight’s return was confirmed.
The Premier League’s resumption will give the Reds the opportunity to wrap up their first title since the division’s inception in 1992 and end a 30-year wait for league glory.
And Carragher was quick to celebrate on social media, using a picture of Neville with a bottle of champagne with the caption: “June 17th, football is back.”
Former United captain Neville has been vocal throughout the campaign on the difficulties he’s endured watching the Reds steamroll their way to the Premier League title, although he has accepted Jurgen Klopp’s side will be deserved winners.
New role for Lewtas
Lewtas, who joined the Reds in 2013, guided the club’s youngsters to FA Youth Cup glory last season having stepped into the job in 2018 when Steven Gerrard left for Rangers.
Liverpool have needed a new under-23s coach since Neil Critchley departed for Blackpool in March and Academy manager Alex Inglethorpe says Lewtas is the right man for the job,
He said: “Barry has been at the club for quite a few years now and has progressed through various age groups. This is another step for him.
“He creates a wonderful environment for the players and has struck a good balance between winning games and developing the talent we have."
The Reds have confirmed 41-year-old Marc Bridge-Wilkinson will take over the under-18s following Lewtas' promotion.
