‘So, so talented’: Jurgen Klinsmann raves about ‘exceptional’ Spurs player

Tottenham Hotspur cult hero Jurgen Klinsmann has waxed lyrical about Spurs striker Harry Kane and believes he’ll be able to win trophies under Jose Mourinho (talkSPORT).

The 26-year-old has been sensational for Tottenham and England over the past few years, coming through the Spurs ranks and becoming an indispensable player for club and country.

To date, Kane has registered 181 goals and 30 assists for Tottenham, as well as 32 goals from 45 England caps.

However, despite his heroics for Spurs, he is yet to lift a major trophy with the North London club.

Kane warned Tottenham in March that he wouldn’t remain at the club “for the sake of it”, and suggested he was willing to leave if he felt Spurs weren’t progressing.

“He can achieve anything he puts his mind to,” Klinsmann told talkSPORT about Kane. “He’s so, so talented, exceptional and he’s now into a stage of his career where he is far more mature. He’s not the young lad anymore, even if you think of him as a young player.

“Watching him from a distance, you wish him now titles. When you play a professional career, and you get the opportunity to play in a top-five team in any country in the world, then it’s about winning titles. And so, I keep all my fingers crossed for Spurs and for him that he can collect trophies – that’s what it is all about at the end of the day.

“That’s why I left in ’95. Even though I loved it at White Hart Lane, I had to leave for Bayern Munich because I said, ‘well I’m running out of time. I’m 31 years old and I need to win a couple more trophies’. But he has that chance with Spurs, he has a fantastic coach, he has a fantastic team and we all keep our fingers crossed that it happens sooner rather than later.”

For a player of Kane’s calibre to not have a single major trophy to his name at 26 years old is concerning.

Football careers aren’t particularly long, and strikers tend to peak around their mid to late twenties, so Kane will surely have some thinking to do this summer.

Likewise, if Spurs want to hang on to Kane, they need to do their bit and convince him that they’re serious about silverware – and strengthen their ranks accordingly.

Klinsmann seems optimistic about Kane lifting silverware at Tottenham, but are they stronger than they were over the last few seasons? And will they get stronger over the course of the summer?
