Centennial Square stage damaged; tenters asked to move

by

City of Victoria bylaw officers on Tuesday asked about six people to remove their tents from the stage in Centennial Square after damage was discovered, said city spokesman Bill Eisenhauer.

Now blocked by blue fences, the stage is temporarily closed as city staff repair the stage, storage areas and some electrical equipment built into the stage.

“City bylaw officers discussed with people sheltering there the need to relocate and people were co-operative and moved to a new location so the work can be completed,” Eisenhauer said. “There are safety considerations and the repairs need to be made now.

City staff also cleaned up some “unsanitary conditions,” he said.

Eisenhauer did not have a damage estimate but said the repairs needed are relatively minor.

In the rest of the square, there are about a handful of tents near the big sequoia tree.
