I wish I could say I didn’t see this coming, but alas: After two years of marriage, Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich are calling it quits. The couple made the announcement via a statement to People, where they explained the details of their separation.
“We have lovingly and carefully taken the time we have needed to arrive at our decision to separate,” they said in a joint statement. “We share an abundance of love and respect for one another and will continue to lead with our hearts from that place. We kindly request your compassion and respect for our privacy moving forward.”

Things appeared to be going well for Julianne and Brooks back in August, when Julianne revealed that she’s not a straight woman. Julianne told Women’s Health that Brooks was incredibly supportive of her. Shortly after Brooks shared his New Year’s resolutions, the first report of his and Julianne’s marital troubles began making the rounds. On New Year’s Eve, Julianne did a performance and went onstage without her ring while cohosting NBC’s New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly. While that doesn’t always mean problems in marriage (she was performing, after all), sources close to the couple revealed that things between Brooks and Julianne were already rocky by then.
“They’ve been having problems for months,” a source told People in January. “She’s very independent and a free spirit, and that’s been tough for Brooks and their marriage.”
Brooks allegedly wanted to make things work with Julianne, but there was a bit of disconnect between the two. “If it was up to Brooks, he would stay married,” a source told People later that month. “He is obviously still hoping things will work out with Jules.” Brooks’s friends were encouraging him to “focus on himself” in the meantime because Julianne “already has her own life that she seems happy with.”
That brings us to today—it is with the heaviest of hearts that I will no longer be able to stan this relationship anymore. If you need me, I will be buying all the boxes of tissues and torturing myself by keeping an eye on possible updates.
