COVID-19: China evacuates 325 of its citizens from Nigeria

- China has joined the list of countries evacuating their citizens from Nigeria

- A total of 325 Chinese nationals left the country on Thursday, May 28 via a chartered flight

- The Chinese nationals left the country on the same day Nigeria reported 182 new infections of coronavirus

China evacuated 325 of its citizens from Nigeria on Thursday, May 28 as the coronavirus cases in the country continues to soar.

A report by Channels Television says the plane carrying the Chinese nationals is heading to the Asian country's commercial capital, Shanghai.

The Chinese nationals left the country on the same day Nigeria reported 182 new infections bringing the total number of cases to 8,915.

France, the UK, and the US are among the countries that have also evacuated their nationals from Nigeria since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The United States of America evacuated 270 of her citizens from Nigeria earlier this month.

The evacuation was announced by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria on Twitter on Wednesday, May 6.

Meanwhile, Samir El-Khodari, a Lebanese living in Nigeria, has revealed that 25 out of the recently evacuated Lebanese nationals from Kano state have tested positive for coronavirus.

According to him, of the 125 Lebanese transported to Beirut from Kano, 25 tested positive for COVID-19.

The number represents one-fifth of those evacuated from the northwest state by the Lebanese government.

Recall that the Lebanese government evacuated 140 of its nationals from the country via the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos on Sunday, April 5.

The Lebanese nationals were flown out of the country after going through screening via an aircraft which flew into the country under humanitarian operations.

In a related development, the federal government has imposed a fine of N1million on a United Kingdom aircraft impounded last week for undertaking illegal commercial operations in Nigeria during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This was disclosed by the minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, via micro-blogging site, Twitter.

“We caused them to pay and reported their callous misdemeanour to United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA), MFA and the UK High Commission,” the minister tweeted on Sunday, May 24.
