BMW details brawny new inline six-cylinder turbodiesel engines...

by

BMW has released details about what it describes as a “new generation” of inline six-cylinder turbodiesel engine.

With an unchanged capacity of 3,0 litres, the straight-six oil-burner will employ 48 V mild-hybrid technology. Furthermore, the Munich-based firm says it has “optimised” the engine’s turbocharging systems, while also adopting the latest version of common rail direct injection with piezo injectors.

In models such as the 730Ld, the engine will gain an extra 15 kW and 30 N.m over the current version, now peaking at 210 kW and 650 N.m (the latter between 1 500 and 2 500 r/min). The X4 xDrive30d, X5 xDrive30d and X6 xDrive30d will also feature this unit, which BMW says has “particularly spontaneous power delivery” thanks to the multi-stage turbocharging system.

There’s also a 250 kW version of the inline-six, which makes an even brawnier 700 N.m between 1 750 and 2,250 r/min. This high-output variant is set to be employed by the 740Ld xDrive, X3 M40d, X4 M40d and X7 xDrive40d.

Both versions of the engine feature exhaust gas treatment technology with engine-related components consisting of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter.

It’s not yet clear whether these new, Euro 6d-compliant engines will be rolled out to South Africa or whether the local market with stick with the existing units.
