Iain Stewart admits the pull of working with Billy Campbell again was too good to turn down after signing up for another spell with Cambuslang Rangers.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper joined from Gartcairn last week as one of three new signings, alongside ex-Alloa and Pollok striker Paul McAulay and former Brechin midfielder Ryan Stewart.

And he’s been quickly reunited with Campbell, whom he worked with at Gartcairn earlier in the season.

Campbell resigned from The Lang in February 2019 and took up the assistant manager’s role at Gartcairn weeks later.

However, Campbell returned to Somervell Park in November after the departure of Alan Paterson and now Stewart will be on his books again when Lang return from the Covid-19 shutdown.

Stewart told the Reformer: “I probably had the chance to stay at Gartcairn, but I’ve worked with Billy before and I couldn’t say no to going back.

“I loved playing under Billy at Cambuslang last time so that’s a big factor.

“The reason I went to Gartcairn was because Billy was there as the assistant and he ended up taking the Cambuslang job halfway through, so I was kind of stranded.

“Don’t get me wrong, I made some good friends at Gartcairn, but Cambuslang is always a team I’ve enjoyed playing for and I would say they are my team.

“It helps that my dad grew up in Cambuslang as well. He loves coming down and watching so that made it quite easy.

“We just don’t know when we will be playing again, that’s the thing.”

When football is allowed to resume, The Lang will be playing in the new-look West of Scotland League Conference B.

That will pit Stewart against his old club Gartcairn, as well as the likes of Ashfield and Port Glasgow.

But he reckons The Lang will be among those pushing for the title.

“I think it will be tight, but we should be up there,” Stewart insisted.

“If we are aiming any lower than winning it, we should be having a good look at ourselves.

“There will be tough games and going back to play my old club won’t be very nice.

“We need to be looking at winning it, I think.

“I’m itching to get out of my garden, never mind get back playing, but it will be great when football is finally back.”
