Lagos state govt approves COVID-19 cash transfer for residents

- Lagosians will soon start receiving 5,000 each from the Lagos state government

- Already, 8,147 cleared beneficiaries from poor and vulnerable households have been cleared for the first phase

- The cleared beneficiaries are from Amuwo Odofin, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju Lekki and Lagos Island

The Lagos government has approved the establishment of the State Cash Transfer Unit (SCTU) for the national cash transfer programme.

The state commissioner for wealth creation and employment, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke disclosed this on Thursday, May 28, The Nation reports.

According to her, in a matter of weeks, the payment of the beneficiaries cleared in the first phase of the programme in the Lagos state’s social register would commence.

She said 8,147 cleared beneficiaries from poor and vulnerable households are from six local government areas and 40 wards.

She further said they will pay the conditional cash transfer of N5, 000 per household monthly in the first phase.

The cleared beneficiaries are from Amuwo Odofin, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju Lekki and Lagos Island.

Nigerian governors have been working tirelessly to ensure that the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic does not affect residents in their respective states.

In Akwa Ibom, Governor Udom Emmanuel has revealed that his vision for the state despite the Covid-19 pandemic is that before his tenure elapses, citizens will enjoy robust economic growth and development even after he leaves office.

The governor made this known during an interactive program with citizens of the state via electronic and social media platforms on Saturday, May 23.

Governor Emmanuel vowed that he will work tirelessly, utilizing whatever resources at his disposal to ensure the prosperity of Akwa Ibom state.

Meanwhile, members of the National Economic Council (NEC) rose from their first virtual meeting on Thursday, May 21 with a resolution to ensure a more effective synergy between the federal government and the state governments especially in matters related to the fallouts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The council is specifically focusing on how to effectively and efficiently reopen the Nigerian economy after the lockdowns and shutdowns across the country.

Chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the council members include all the 36 state governors, the FCT minister, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor and other top officials of the federal government.
