Storm warning: Parts of WA urged to prepare as another cold front closes in

by

State Emergency Service volunteers have answered more than 50 calls for help since Friday morning as another storm closes in on Western Australia.

While it's not expected to bring damage as severe as the one large parts of the state experienced earlier this week, very strong winds, heavy rain, and high tides are likely.

Locations that may be affected include Perth, Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Katanning, Mandurah, Manjimup, Margaret River, Mount Barker and Narrogin.

This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous, just in time for the long weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the front would move through south-west parts of WA during Friday morning and afternoon, while a pool of cold air behind the front would move over the south coast in the evening.

Damaging winds averaging 60-70km/h with peak gusts up to 100km/h are possible, particularly in coastal parts south of Mandurah, and could cause damage to homes and property.

Severe winds developed south-west of a line from Busselton to Walpole from about 5am Friday, extending to south-west of a line from Mandurah to Albany by about 8am and to Perth and Bremer Bay by midday.

Squally thunderstorms are likely with the passage of the front and hail is possible south of Bunbury to Katanning behind the front on Friday evening.

Rainfalls of 40 to 50mm are possible in the Perth hills and parts of the South West, and tides will be higher than expected between Yanchep and Mandurah.

Tides between Mandurah and Albany are likely to rise above the normal high tide mark with very rough seas and potential flooding of low-lying coastal areas expected.

This is typical weather for this time of the year and winds may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous.
