Corrections officer shot at outside Whanganui Prison

The victim of a shooting in Whanganui on Wednesday was a Corrections officer, it's been revealed.

Stuff reports the man was followed to the Whanganui Prison car park after an earlier traffic incident. Multiple shots were heard from inside the prison.

On Friday a Corrections spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying the staff member is being provided with support.

They were not injured in the shooting, reports Stuff.

The president of the Corrections Association Alan Whitely said the details were "sketchy", but it seems the officer was in a traffic incident on his way to work.

"At the moment we don't know if it's related to him being a prison officer or ... a bad case of road rage."

Police told Newshub they are making enquiries into the incident and no arrests have been made.
