Shots fired during ‘tense’ George Floyd protests in Denver

Shots were fired at a George Floyd demonstration in Denver Thursday evening, with one protester filmed being run over after an altercation with a driver.

The shooting occurred in a park across the street from the Colorado Capitol after most of the several hundred protesters who had gathered already had left the area to march downtown, according to Gary Cutler, a spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

About six or seven shots rang out, though it was unclear if protesters were being targeted, police said. No injuries were reported.

“We just got shot at,” tweeted State Rep. Leslie Herod, who was at the Capitol at the time.

Herod added that a “person was apprehended” in the shooting and that the “scene is tense.”

The crowds were demanding justice for Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis Monday after he was filmed shouting “I can’t breathe” while an officer pinned him to the ground by his neck during an arrest. The four officers involved in Floyd’s detainment have been fired.

Protesters carried signs that read “Killer cops f–k off” and “no more racism” as they banged on the doors to the Capitol, chanting “black lives matter.”

Groups slowed traffic as they marched through downtown Denver. In one heart-stopping clip posted to Twitter, a driver can be seen seemingly intentionally clipping a protestor with their SUV.

The video begins with several protesters surrounding the vehicle, as a young man crouches on the hood of the car. As the driver steps on the gas, the crowd disperses and the man jumps off the vehicle.

But then the driver then whips a sharp U-turn on the street to knock the man over.

“Downtown denver. Some girl turned around to run this guy over,” tweeted the protester who posted the clip.

“We wanted a peaceful protest,” she added in a second tweet. “Everyone had walked away from the car and she purposely turned around and ran him over.”

Floyd’s death has sparked outrage across the country and has led to violent protests in Minneapolis as well as demonstrations in other major cities, including New York and Los Angeles.
