LATEST @ 12.30 PM | A female zookeeper has been airlifted to hospital after being attacked by two lions at a zoo in NSW.

Emergency crews were called to Shoalhaven Zoo just before 10.30am on Friday after receiving reports a woman had been bitten by lions.

It’s understood the keeper was cleaning the enclosure when she was attacked.

The 35-year-old woman suffered neck and facial wounds and is in a critical but stable condition.

A helicopter was tasked to the scene, with the woman flown to St George Hospital in Sydney.

A crime scene has been established with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident now underway.

SafeWork NSW have also been notified.

According to Facebook, Shoalhaven Zoo has been closed since March 25 due to coronavirus restrictions.

“While we are closed to the public we as a family will continue to live onsite and have key staff coming in to help us ensure the safety and wellbeing, cleaning and feeding of all our animals,” the zoo said in a post.

“We value our staff and it has been heart wrenching to stand down some staff. Stay safe everyone! Thank you for all your support and we look forward to seeing you all back at the zoo soon.”
