The Met Office said less than 3.5 inches of rain has fallen since the start of March.

With coronavirus lockdown measures easing in England and people able to meet in groups of six from Monday, Brits are hoping that the heatwave will hold out.

The Met Office, however, has said that there will be “an increased chance of rain” next week, with some areas predicted to see up to 17mm in just 24 hours.

SUNNY WEEKEND

Forecasters said the mercury is set to be at its highest level of the year so far today and on Saturday, with some areas likely to reach 28C.

Nicola Maxey said: “There is little in the way of rain on the forecast for the next few days.

“It’s going to be sunny and warm and temperatures are going to continue rising into the weekend with 28C expected by Friday.

“On Sunday, the last day of the month, we could even see the hottest day of the year so far as temperatures creep up.

“Chances are we are going to see England record its driest May ever – and the fourth driest Spring on record.”

With rain levels low and water usage soaring while millions stay at home, water companies have already starting issuing alerts ordering Brits to cut down.

South East Water wrote to their customers: “We're seeing a huge demand on our network due to more of us being at home.

“Our key workers continue to work around the clock, but we’re asking everyone to help us by taking simple steps.

“They include not watering lawns, reusing paddling pool water and only using dishwashers and washing machines on full loads to help make sure there is enough water for everyone.

“We’ve been treating and pumping an additional 78 million litres of water a day through our network.”

RAINY DAYS

Brits are set to see a turn in the weather after the balmy weekend.

Forecasters are predicting increased chances of rain in northern regions of the UK at the beginning of next week, with the drizzly front then moving southwards.

Southern parts of the country will get hotter for a time before then also starting this gradual change to cooler more unsettled weather with an increased chance of rain or showers.Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern

The Met Office’s Aidan McGivern said: “For the start of next week subtle changes taking place as an area of low pressure approaches northern Scotland.

“This will bring cooler and more unsettled weather to the North.”

The South will likely still enjoy the warm weather at the start of next week, but the cooler front will arrive shortly after.

Mr McGivern continued: “There’s the potential during Tuesday and Wednesday for southern parts of England and South Wales to be even hotter.

“They could even approach 30C.

“But further north it seems likely that we will see increased cloud, an increased chance of rain or showers by Wednesday and cooler air arriving.”

He added: “There is increased uncertainty around the middle of next week for the timing of the change to cooler added.

“It looks likely that northern parts of the country will see a change to cooler more unsettled weather around the early part of next week.

"Southern parts of the country will get hotter for a time before then also starting this gradual change to cooler more unsettled weather with an increased chance of rain or showers.”
