Portimonense re-start Primeira Liga action
by Chris WrightPortimonense, desperately fighting for survival in the top flight, host Gil Vicente, next Wednesday,
3 June at 7pm. This will be the first of ninety top flight games being played, all behind closed doors, with strict health and safety criteria issued by the Directorate-General of Health. Strict control of numbers entering the stadium on match day will see a maximum of 185 personnel including players and technical staff.
The fixtures for the final round of games have not been announced, as the need to simultaneously schedule matches that will have a bearing on the title winners, European qualification, or relegation places will only be known nearer the time.
All games will shown on the subscription channels Sport TV and B TV. After the Portimonense game, leaders FC Porto will face a stern test of their title credentials as they travel to the season’s surprise package, Famalicão. Benfica, currently a point behind Porto, host Tondela the following day (4 June), with Lisbon rivals Sporting travelling to V.Guimarães later in the evening. Earlier in the day the action kicks off in Madeira with Marítimo hosting Vitória Setúbal.
On Friday, 5 June third place SC Braga, with a four point buffer over Sporting, will play Santa Clara in Lisbon at the Portugal Football Federation’s (FPF) state-of-the-art Cidade do Futebol training facility, on the outskirts of Lisbon, where the Azorean team will play all their “home” matches. Later in the evening CD Aves host Beleneneses. The northern minnows lifted the Portuguese Cup in stunning fashion in 2017/2018, but now need a minor miracle to beat relegation as they are nine points adrift of safety.
The weekend games are Boavista-Moreirense (Saturday) and Rio Ave-Paços de Ferreira (Sunday).
Unfortunately for many supporters in Portugal, the idea to broadcast the matches on non-subscription free-to-air channels was quickly shot down, and channel Sport TV will be hoping to make up for lost viewing figures due to the interruption with some big audiences. On the 10 June reigning champions Benfica visit Portimonense with a 7.15pm kick-off which would normally have ensured a packed municipal stadium. Later the same day, FC Porto entertain Marítimo.
If the title chase goes to the last weekend of the season in late July, the championship has the makings of an epic finale with Benfica playing Sporting at the Estádio da Luz and SC Braga entertaining FC Porto at the Quarry!
