COP asks for “specific guidelines” for resuming sport

The Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP) has asked for “specific guidelines” for the resumption of sports activities, namely with regard to “the return of competitions and the use of indoor facilities”.

In a letter sent to the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Rebelo, from the COP noted the “need” for these guidelines “to be issued as quickly as possible”, as the organisation believes that “the sustainability of sports organisations will depend on them” , namely clubs, in preparation for the next sporting season”.
In view of the constraints caused by Covid-19, which ended sporting seasons of various modalities around the world, the COP highlights the recent public position of the United Nations Department of Economics and Social Affairs, which recommends government authorities to adopt policies that can protect sport from the impact of the pandemic.

In the opinion of the COP, the resumption of activity “will be essential” to enhance the training process of athletes who have already been able to return to regular practice, namely high performance athletes and national teams.
No less important, it will allow for “the return to confidence of the remaining athletes, as well as their families”.
