First dates contestant leaves viewers in tears as he recounts mum's death
by Lucy SkouldingTonight’s episode of First Dates Hotel was a real tear jerker as one contestant revealed his mum died suddenly in August.
Chef James was having a lovely dinner date with actor Jamie, with the pair getting to know each other over some deep conversations.
James opened up to reveal that his mum suddenly passed away less than a year ago.
He said she hadn’t really been ill and that it was all unexpected.
‘She went to the doctors on the Friday morning and passed away that evening,’ he said.
‘My dad rang me to tell me. He said they found mum and she wasn’t breathing.’
James’ mum had sadly died after internal bleeding in her stomach. She was 58 years old.
He continued: ‘I went to her house and the police handed me the jewellery she had been wearing.
‘The last thing I sent her on Whatsapp was “I love you so much”. She was online but didn’t read it. Hopefully she was just playing hard to get.’
Referring to his decision to come on First Dates, he added: ‘She would be so happy I did this.’
As you can imagine, James’ story set us all off.
‘Why am I crying over First Dates what is happening!’ said one person.
Another viewer added: ‘His little face crying for the loss of his Mum, I’m gone, gutted for him.’
‘First Dates Hotel makes me cry every time,’ said another Twitter user.
James and Jamie didn’t hit it off romantically in the end.
They were going to have a second date but James thought they weren’t quite right for each other.
James said to Jamie: ‘I think we should just be friends – I think you need more reassurance than I can give you.’
Jamie seemed to take it well and the two of them continued enjoying the sun as friends.
The end of the show, in fact, showed James staying on at the First Dates Hotel for another shot at finding love.
First Dates Hotel returns Thursday at 9pm on Channel 4.
