Grimes is selling an actual piece of her soul
by Lucy SkouldingGenesis singer Grimes has decided to sell a bit of her soul. Like actually.
The musician and girlfriend of billionaire, Elon Musk, is gearing up to present her art to the world in her show, Selling Out.
Grimes, whose given name is Claire Boucher, will present a range of prints, photographs, drawings and conceptual art in the show.
But part of it will also include the opportunity for a purchaser to buy a percentage of her soul.
The 32-year-old is offering up a legal document that, if bought, will mean the buyer owns some of her soul.
Two simultaneous online art exhibitions will see Grimes’ show displayed.
It will be on Gallery Platform Los Angeles from 28 May to 3 June and Maccarone Los Angeles from 28 May until 31 August.
Initially, Grimes didn’t want anyone to buy the document, which she came up with to represent the nature of celebrity and personal identity.
She told Bloomberg: ‘I didn’t want anyone to buy it, so I said we should just make it $10 million [£8.1m] and then it probably won’t sell.’
But she’s reassessed her thoughts about it since the coronavirus outbreak.
She added: ‘With the current state of the world, do you want to put something up for $10 million?’
Grimes settled for best offer on the piece – so it’s up to the public to decide how much a piece of her soul is worth.
Grimes and Musk, 48, shared their relationship with the world in May 2018 when they appeared together at the Met Gala.
The couple have since had their child, X Æ A-12 together.
Musk also has six other children with his first wife Justine, Nevada, Damien, Saxon, Griffin, Xavier and Kai.
Grimes has recently said of her passion for art: ‘I made art 10, 12 years before I ever touched a keyboard.
‘I see myself as a visual artist first and foremost, and I’ve always felt strange that people know me for music.’
The star rose to fame with songs including Genesis and Oblivion.
