The Acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr James Kwabena Bomfeh, has stated that political parties, the media and other individuals should allow the Electoral Commission to exercise their mandate without intimidation.
Mr James Kwabena admonition follows a barrage of attacks on the EC by the National Democratic Congress after the state electoral body submitted a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) to parliament to pass a legislation to enable citizens to use the Ghana Card and Ghana passport for registration as voters.
He said the decision by the EC to proceed with the compilation in the midst of opposition was not in breach of any law but in line with the powers bestowed on the body by the 1992 constitution.
‘’We have to allow the EC to work according to the laws of the country. When that happens, we have to keep an eye on them to know if they are working according to the law. If they are doing their job according to the law and they are not breaching the law then we will have to allow them do their job” Mr James Kwabena Bomfeh told Reynold Agyemang on ‘Pae Mu Ka’ on Accra-based Kingdom FM 107.7
The EC has justified its decision for a new Voters Register following advice from its Information Technology (IT) personnel and external IT consultants.
It explained that an assessment by the experts revealed that the current biometric register is obsolete, hence the need to acquire a new one.
