Khammam: Farmers in Sathupalli Assembly constituency were advised to cultivate sugarcane crop in large extent of land this Vaanakalam season to ensure profitability.

Farmers awareness programmes were organised at several villages in Tallada and Kallur mandals in the constituency on Friday. MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah and District Collector RV Karnan addressed the meeting and interacted with farmers.

The Collector addressing a gathering at Chinakorukondi village of Kallur mandal, suggested that the local farmers have to give priority to sugarcane cultivation based on the nature of the soil as there was a sugar factory at Kallur.

“The State government has introduced regulated farming system to benefit the farming community across the State. For this Vaanakalam season, farmers should prefer cultivating cotton, chilli and fine variety of paddy. Red-gram could be taken up for inter-cropping with cotton,” Karnan said.

MLA Veeraiah noted that Sathupalli constituency was known for diversified cropping pattern wherein the farmers cultivate chilli, cotton and sugarcane besides paddy instead of going for a single crop. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had launched Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project in order to ensure last-mile connectivity. Godavari waters could irrigate the lands in the constituency in the next agriculture season, he noted.

He informed that in yasangi season, paddy procurement had taken place on a record level as 1.50 lakh metric tonnes grains were procured. He also felicitated Collector, police and revenue officials for successfully containing spread covid-19.

Kallur Revenue Divisional Officer Dhasharath and others were present. The seeds of green manure were distributed to the farmers at the programme.
