Authorities are working to confirm if a boat found on Thursday belonged to a fisherman missing from the Fraser Coast for more than two days.

A third day of search efforts are under way to locate missing Hervey Bay man Paul Brazier, 37, who failed to return home on Tuesday after leaving for an overnight fishing trip the day before.

Police were alerted on Wednesday afternoon, sparking an extensive search response including water police, Volunteer Marine Rescue, the Boating and Fisheries Department and a rescue helicopter.

An expanded search on Thursday, including fixed-wing aircraft, also combed waters off Fraser Island.

A police spokesman said it had not been confirmed if a boat found on Thursday belonged to Mr Brazier.

He left Urangan Boat Harbor about 1.30pm on Monday, with search efforts on Wednesday focusing on waters off Hervey Bay.

Mr Brazier is described as Caucasian, about 177 centimetres tall, and of proportionate build with red crew-cut hair, a beard and moustache.

The boat he was travelling in was a white 5.4-metre powerboat.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen either Mr Brazier or his boat to come forward.
