Police say initial investigations suggest the boy had been with three others when arguments broke out with a second group at Mooroobool's Shang Park.

It is believed the 12-year-old boy was then involved in a physical altercation between two groups and fell to the ground unconscious, police said in statement.

The boy was taken to Cairns Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A crime scene has been declared, with detectives now investigating the details of the altercation in order to determine how the boy died.

Police are expected to address media on Friday afternoon.
