MSI confirms AMD Zen 3 support for its B450 and X470 motherboards

by

MSI has confirmed that its 400-series motherboards will be compatible with AMD's upcoming Zen-3 desktop processors. Codenamed Vermeer, the processors will work with MAX and non-MAX boards.

There has been a lot of B450 and Socket AM4 news of late. Last month, XMG confirmed that the B450 chipset would support Zen 3 desktop processors. However, AMD then announced earlier this month that this would not be the case, a stance that it has since reversed.

Now MSI has confirmed that its 400-series motherboards will be compatible with the Zen 3 architecture. Speaking in a video posted on YouTube  representatives stated that support for the new architecture would be made available via an optional beta BIOS. Please see our coverage of AMD's proposed upgrade path for more information about what this means for B450 and X470 motherboards generally.

MSI's support for the 400-series applies to both its MAX and non-MAX motherboards. However, the company has made an important distinction between the two. On the one hand, MSI claims that it foresees no problems with bringing Zen 3 support to MAX motherboards as they have 32 MB BIOSes. On the other hand, the 16 MB BIOSes of non-MAX motherboards poses limitations. To get around this MSI will strip back the features of non-MAX motherboards while dropping support for older CPUs. MSI is yet to specify what CPUs will be affected, though.
