On Saturday, the UFC returns to Las Vegas for its first event there since March 7. On Wednesday the Nevada State Athletic Commission gave the promotion the green light to hold the UFC on ESPN 9 fight card, which is headlined by a welterweight bout between Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns, at the UFC Apex.

Woodley, who is the former UFC welterweight champion, has not stepped into the octagon since he lost that title to Kamaru Usman in March 2019. Woodley captured the UFC title in July 2016 with a first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler. He defended the belt four times before he dropped a decision to Usman at UFC 235.

After a 7-3 run in the UFC’s lightweight division, Burns has quickly climbed the welterweight rankings. He is currently ranked No. 6 in the division. His last win came in March when he earned a first-round TKO over former welterweight title challenger Demian Maia. That victory earned Burns his first UFC post-fight bonus as a welterweight.

The opening fight of the main card sees Mackenzie Dern match up against Hannah Cifers in a women’s strawweight scrap. Dern is coming off her first career loss. She lost a decision to Amanda Ribas in October 2019. Her career record is now 7-1. Cifers, who is 10-4, also dropped her most recent outing. Angela Hill stopped Cifers via TKO in January. She had been on a two-fight winning streak before that setback.

At the top of the prelim card, former women’s flyweight title challenger Katlyn Chookagian faces Antonina Shevchenko in a 125-pound champion. Shevchenko is the sister of UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.
