Amazon Video Announces New Films And TV Shows For June (2020)

by

Amazon has finally released the list of new TV shows and films it’s adding to its (US) Prime Video service in June. And although it’s far from the longest list we’ve seen, there are some definite goodies among the nearly 60 new titles.

The biggest ‘must see’ addition - if you haven’t seen it already - is Rian Johnson’s excellent crime caper, Knives Out. Available to watch within a normal Amazon Prime subscription from June 12, Knives Out (which I review on 4K Blu-ray here) brings together an all-star cast to put a modern twist on a great Agatha Christie-like mystery that contains just the right amount of twists, turns and red herrings.

Other relatively recent film releases arriving within an Amazon Prime Video subscription in June include the 2019 ‘re-imagining’ of evil doll chiller Child’s Play; surprisingly decent alligator horror flick Crawl; and Daniel Radcliffe-starrer Guns Akimbo, in which Radcliffe plays a video game developer who accidentally gets involved in a real-life death match with a highly-trained killer.

If you don’t mind paying extra to buy or rent films from Amazon Prime Video, then it’s interesting to see new Scooby-Doo film SCOOB! turning up on there already (it actually became a late addition to May’s slate), having been denied its expected cinema run by the Coronavirus. That doesn’t mean that it’s a particularly must-see film, but it will doubtless play its part in the post COVID-19 assessment of how movies get released in the future.

Two other 2020 titles arriving on Prime Video in June to buy or rent are The High Note (about an egocentric superstar and her overworked PA who dreams of becoming a music producer) and The King Of Staten Island (a semi-autobiographical comedy-drama about the life of stand-up comedian Pete Davidson, who lost his father during the 9/11 atrocity).

Some of you (you know who you are) will also doubtless be giddy to learn that Dirty Dancing is arriving free on June 1 within an Amazon Prime Video subscription. And if that’s not enough for you, it’s even joined by the 2004 sequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. I’m afraid to say I haven’t seen Havana Nights, but I see that it’s one of those films with a huge gap between the Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience scores: 23% vs 73%. Make of that what you will.

Much more up my street is fantastically tasteless Farrelly Brothers comedy, Kingpin. I’m pretty sure I remember highlighting this masterpiece of bowling celebrations and bull milking in a previous monthly Amazon additions article, so I guess it must have left the platform at some point. But the key point is, IT’S BACK! From June 1.

Other back catalogue highlights of Amazon’s June additions include 1984’s Barry Levinson-directed baseball drama The Natural; biographical political drama Fair Game (directed by Doug Liman and starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn); Spike Jonze’s strangely dour but beautiful 2009 adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book Where The Wild Things Are; and Brad Bird’s entry into the Mission: Impossible series, Ghost Protocol. All of these arrive on June 1, except Where The Wild Things Are, which arrives on June 30.

Kids still trying to kill time during lockdown measures might also be pleased to see the arrival free within an Amazon Prime subscription of How To Train Your Dragon (June 1), Shrek Forever After (June 1) and Spy Kids (June 30).

There are four new Amazon Original productions to look out for in June. The main new series is Regular Heroes. This weekly docuseries focuses on essential workers in the US who are risking their lives during the pandemic - as told by special guests Alicia Keys, Kevin Hart, Nick Jonas, Kelly Roland and more.

A new stand-up show from Gina Brillon, meanwhile, arrives (in 4K) from June 5, while Amazon Original movie 7500 stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a co-pilot faced with a horrific choice as terrorists who hijack his plane start killing passengers to try and make him open the cockpit. This one drops in 4K and HDR from June 19.
