Barack Obama’s Graduation Address Blasts Past Rosiest Ratings Predictions With 60 Million Viewers-Five Unexpected Reasons Trump Should Worry
by Tom NunanAt a time when the world couldn’t appear more hopeless to graduating high school seniors, a former president stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam of a message, comforting and guiding all who watched.
The Lebron James’ produced, star-studded, one hour commencement ceremony aired across multiple linear, cable and social media platforms, adding up to a whopping 60 million viewers.
The special built to the program’s most highly promoted speaker, former U.S. President Barack Obama. The noted orator and past trusted leader didn’t disappoint. His speech was embraced by media outlets in the U.S. and around the world.
Here are five reasons why Trump should be especially concerned about Obama’s impact:
1. Biden=Obama. Although no sane political pundit would ever equate the popularity, charisma and star-power of Barack Obama to Joe Biden, it certainly helps that Obama’s close ties to the Democratic Party’s 2020 contender are airtight, healthy and reliable. The ratings suggest profound interest in the message Obama carries, which Biden is expected to closely mirror.
2. The campaign has only begun. Seeing Obama’s ratings soar in such an unprecedented fashion foretells limitless opportunities for Biden’s “campaigner in chief” to unleash more specials, more appearances and more unique video moments to further damage Trump’s hopes for winning re-election.
3. Not all of those viewers were high school seniors. The demographics for the special should further aggravate Trump. A wide swath of demographics watched the special live, and an even broader audience tuned in later via YouTube and other portals. Obama’s message, in other words, may have been aimed to high schoolers graduating, but the country showed its desperation for an alternative message by volunteering to tune in to a graduation ceremony. When was the last time any of us watched a commencement address, when we didn’t have to??
4. Still, high school seniors matter. Most graduating seniors are 18 years old, ready to vote in their first presidential election. What better runway could Joe Biden hope for than to have his pal and former boss warm up this young demographic? Biden leads most polls against Trump, but he’s always been soft when it comes to young voters. This special makes him more relevant to the youth market, by association to Obama.
5. What’s next? No one expected such a thunderous wave of viewers for a high school commencement. Even Obama’s most widely watched events during his own presidency rarely rated this highly. Imagine if the Biden campaign can come up with an even more “viewer friendly” event to generate even higher viewership?
Trump’s obsessed with addressing a live audience at the Republican National Convention in August, a conference that may draw 50,000 arena guests. Televised political conventions rarely draw meaningful television numbers.
