Parler App’s #Twexit Movement Recruits Twitter Users In Wake Of Trump Social Media Wars

by

President Donald Trump is going to war with the social media giants. Now, there’s a move afoot amongst his conservative supporters to abandon Twitter, Trump’s favorite platform and his biggest online rival.

This week, Trump and Twitter went back and forth with accusations and counteraccusations, sanctions and threats. Most recently, Twitter flagged Trump’s comments on the George Floyd civil rights protests in Minnesota – leading to Trump calling for the revoking of Section 230 for the social media platform. That revocation would mean Twitter loses its immunity from lawsuits if controversial material gets tweeted.

As a result, social media platform Parler (self-described as “the people driven social platform”) pushed a new #Twexit campaign to recruit disgruntled Twitter uses who support Trump or oppose Twitter’s sanctioning. Parler’s new site, Twexit.com, allows Twitter users who want to abandon that platform to switch to Parler quickly and easily.

Parler was founded in 2018 and claims more than 1 million users. The platform’s mission statement says it’s “committed to free speech, does not mine or sell user data, and does not censor content based on politics or ideology. Parler continues to stand with the People and against Technofascism.”

According to Parler’s statement announcing the #Twexit push: “The current surge towards Parler followed quickly on the heels of Twitter using CNN and the Washington Post – both notoriously antagonistic towards President Trump — to ‘fact check’ his tweet warning that mail-in ballots could corrupt the electoral process. While ignoring numerous studies supporting Trump’s view, Twitter claimed the charges were ‘unsubstantiated,’ engendering a firestorm of protests.”

To explain why it considers it necessary to drive users from Twitter, Parler cites recent controversies and censorship allegations against the tech corporation: “(Twitter’s) head of site integrity, Yoel Roth, compared White House aide Kellyanne Conway to Hitler propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels...Also characterizing Republican leader Mitch McConnell as ‘a bag of farts.’”

Twitter issued no official statement on Parler, the #Twexit movement or whether Senator McConnell is indeed a container for flatulence.
