KSU plea for waiving fees in private schools

by

SHILLONG: In the light of the acute economic hardship faced by the people of the state due to the indefinite lockdown, the Education Cell of the Khasi Students’ Union has stepped in to take up the cause of the teachers and the students of private schools.
The students’ body has urged the government to make sure that the salaries of private school teachers are released by these schools and at the same time condone the payment of fees by the needy students.
In a letter to Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, the Union said that though it understands the situation of the students belonging to economically weaker section (EWS), who are struggling to pay fees to the private school and colleges, yet it has called for alternative measures by the government so that no citizen of the state is left in the lurch.
The Union has suggested the Education department to direct the school and colleges to identify the students belonging from EWS to waive off or deduct the fees by some per cent.
For the students who can afford to pay the fees, the Union has suggested giving sufficient time period to such students to clear their fees.
“Although, the Education department on April 25 had decided to waive off the fees from March to May, for students coming from lesser background, but as of now no official resolution or order has been passed and the Union has witnessed that the school and colleges are demanding the fees from the students without any consideration,” the Union said.
It has also suggested the department to forward an official order to the schools and colleges so that they are made aware of the decision taken by the government.
As for the HSSLC examination, which is scheduled from July 8, the Union stated that public transportation (Contd on P-10)
