Dana White thanks John Oliver for ‘UF-Sea’ idea, but ‘I’m not giving you a cut’

“Look at me Dana. Why didn’t you just call it UF-Sea? It’s perfect.”

Those were the words of advice offered by Last Week Tonight host John Oliver during a recent episode of his HBO series when discussing the UFC’s plans for “Fight Island.”

Dana White was obviously listening.

Earlier this week, the promotion filed several trademarks for “UF-Sea” as the promotion prepares to take cards to “Fight Island” in the very near future.

The UFC president was happy to credit Oliver for a great idea, although he probably shouldn’t be holding his breath for any residual payments.

“John Oliver came out and did that piece [on Last Week Tonight] with selective facts about what we had done in Florida and all that stuff and UF-Sea,” White said when speaking to ESPN. “So I told my lawyers after that, see if the trademarks are there for ‘UFSea.’ So obviously it did and you guys know about them.

“I think we got it. Thanks, John Oliver. I’m not giving you a cut either.”

Oliver brought up the UFC during a segment where he addressed the return of sports with the coronavirus pandemic still claiming lives all across the globe.

While many leagues are discussing plans on how to come back safely, the UFC was the first major organization to get back to business with three shows that all took place behind closed doors in Jacksonville, Fla.

The UFC schedule will get even busier now that the state of Nevada voted to allow combat sports to return with the first event taking place this weekend at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

As for “UF-Sea,” considering the promotion already has “Fight Island” shirts up for sale, it probably won’t be long until Oliver’s idea starts churning a profit.
