Sweet memories

THE elegant television producer turned social entrepreneur Zarina Mehta is bereaved. Her utterly elegant mother Villie Mehta passed away of a heart attack earlier this week. Villie was the firebrand wife of Brigadier Furdoon Mehta who served as a high-ranking diplomat in Washington. Better loved for her excellent culinary skills, Villie was also a well-known home-style baker and taught several young women the art of maintaining a kitchen and laying a table. Among her students have been former Tata chairman Cyrus Mistry’s mum Pat and Mana Shetty. She will be missed.

A high-profile client

WE are patting ourselves on the back for being so sharp-eyed. We spotted one of our own art works in a photo in The Daily Beast yesterday. Along with their scoop on the Donald Trump administration prepping to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia was a throwback picture of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Behind them is a mid-century Modern wall sculpture made of brass that comes from the New Delhi-based atelier of the talented design maven Vikram Goyal. Goyal, it turns out, was as surprised at the discovery of who his client was, as interior design agents rarely disclose the buyer’s identity, more so if a high-profile one.

Hands on work

WHILE attending various webinars and talks on virtual platforms have kept the art world busy of late, this workshop seems to satiate their need to experience the medium hands on. Delhi-based visual artist Gagan Singh, known for his satirical take on current affairs, is conducting a live workshop on a video conferencing platform on Saturday. In ‘How to Think Through Drawings’, Singh will encourage the participants to create their own work. Mortimer Chatterjee, whose gallery (which he runs along with his wife Tara Lal) represents Singh’s work, adds, “Gagan has been actively documenting his life during lockdown with his whimsical drawings. This virtual workshop will give attendees an insight into his process and provide an opportunity to think through drawing themselves.”

Tailpiece

THERE
is more to the Producers Guild of India submitting a set of protocol to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in order to resume film and TV shoots. Contrary to public opinion, it was actually the efforts of one particular production house that saw this through. Even the SOP was prepared by this company’s chief. Magnanimity kicked in and the firm, closely associated with a superstar, decided against going solo and asked the guild to join in.
