With the government showing no signs of reopening movie theatres any time soon, the natural, social distancing-friendly solution seems to be the return of the old-school drive-in cinema. Sydney’s only permanent drive-in is Blacktown’s Skyline cinema – and it reopened last night.

Once again, those with four wheels at their disposal can make like Danny and Sandy in Grease (which, incidentally, will screen tomorrow at 6.30pm) and settle in for a night of cinema magic from the comfort of their own cars. In the coming days, blockbusters including Joker, Frozen 2, Ford v Ferrari and Birds of Prey will screen, with other movies – such as The Goonies, The Angry Birds Movie and It Chapter 2 – slated for the next couple of weeks. The cinema has two screens facing each other, which means two screenings can happen at once, with drivers tuning into a radio station for the audio.

The drive-in’s ’50s-style diner has also reopened, serving American-style food such as burgers, fries and choc-tops. And if you’d prefer your cinematic experience a little more socially distanced, Skyline has also introduced a drive-in candy bar stocked with snacks and hot meals. Even if you’re not watching a movie at the Skyline, you can order online from the candy bar and pick up your snacks for an at-home cinema night.

A slew of new health and safety measures have been introduced, including appropriate spacing between cars, increased cleaning of all areas and contactless payment. Tickets start at $25 per car, and online bookings are recommended.
