McDonald’s 'mega fans' drive 250 miles to load up on fast-food at nearest drive-thru

by

Two fast-food "mega fans" drove 250 miles for their first McDonald's hit in eight weeks - spending an incredible £47 on food and petrol.

Ryan Hall and Paisley Hamilton travelled from Hull to their nearest open drive-thru in Peterborough before scoffing down double cheeseburgers and McNuggets in minutes.

“It was definitely a ‘F*** it’ moment which actually ended up costing me a lot of money," EE customer adviser Ryan said.

"But I’d do it all again. It was so worth it."

The pair, both 23, "wolfed" down their food - which also included a Big Mac meal, a McChicken sandwich and a Filet-O-Fish - in Ryan's Fiat 500 before getting home after seven hours.

He said they had taken the scenic route along the coast last Saturday in blazing sunshine, only to be faced with a 30-car queue on arrival.

“Even the queue was a highlight. I had my car soft-top down, blasting out Rain On Me by Lady Gaga. Everyone else there was joining in with the mini rave, he told The Sun.

It comes as McDonald's is rapidly expanding its store openings across the UK and Ireland to have more than 1,000 restaurants reopened for drive-thru or delivery by next Thursday, June 4.

Last week, the fast food chain reopened 33 drive-thru sites but the company said it decided to close some lanes where demand "impacted local communities or the safety of our people or customers" due to long queues.

The company said every drive-thru in the UK and Ireland will be reopened between Tuesday and Thursday of next week.

It said it will reveal the locations of reopening restaurants on the morning they open their doors to help manage demand and it is working with local authorities and the police over openings.

McDonald's said staff will use face coverings and gloves, while Perspex screens and social distancing measures have also been introduced.

The chain said it will continue to offer a limited menu over reduced hours and will cap spending at £25.

A McDonald's spokesman said: "This is only possible following the hard work of the teams in our 44 pilot restaurants."
