Police were alerted on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a search response including water police, Volunteer Marine Rescue, the Boating and Fisheries Department and the LifeFlight rescue helicopter.

"A search was commenced yesterday afternoon and failed to locate Paul or his boat," police said in a statement.

Mr Brazier left Urangan Boat Harbor about 1.30pm on Monday, with search efforts on Wednesday focusing on waters off Hervey Bay.

An expanded search on Thursday, including fixed-wing aircraft, will also comb waters off Fraser Island.

Mr Brazier is described as Caucasian, about 177 centimetres tall, and of proportionate build with red crew-cut hair, a beard and moustache.

The boat he was travelling in was a white 5.4-metre powerboat.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen either Mr Brazier or his boat to come forward.
