Police were alerted on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a search response including water police, Volunteer Marine Rescue, the Boating and Fisheries Department and the LifeFlight rescue helicopter.

The man left Urangan Boat Harbor about 1.30pm on Monday, with search efforts yesterday focusing on waters off Hervey Bay.

He is described as Caucasian, about 177 centimetres tall, and of proportionate build with red crew-cut hair, a beard and moustache.

The boat he was travelling in was a white 5.4-metre powerboat.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen either to come forward.
