Mercedes-AMG Electrifies Its V6 Twin-Turbo E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé
Bringing 435 HP and a top speed of 167 MPH.
by Eric BrainMercedes-AMG has unveiled the all-new E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé, its latest two-door that’s back to dominate the super sports car market.
The new model comes equipped with an electrified six-cylinder, three-liter engine with twin turbocharging via an exhaust gas turbocharger and an additional electric compressor, which combined produces 435 HP and 520 Nm of torque. Furthermore, an EQ Boost starter-alternator is fitted to briefly provide the coupé with 16 kW of output (22 HP) plus 250 Nm of torque, which is all fed through a nine-speed automatic transmission and a fully variable all-wheel-drive system.
This combination of electrification and turbocharged power means that the E 53 lacks turbo lag, instead responding immediately when the peddle is pushed. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 MPH but can be opened up to 167 MPH with the optional AMG Driver‘s Package. 0-62 MPH is reached in just 4.4 seconds.
Mercedes-AMG has enhanced comfort and sportiness, incorporating a host of new driving modes from “Slippery” to “Sport+,” the latter being the most hardcore setting on tap. Drivers also have the option of pressing the “M” button which makes the car manual and activates the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
Outside you’ll find a redesigned body featuring more angular headlights, a larger front air intake on the grille, an aerodynamic rear end equipped with new, round twin tailpipes, as well as a range of new rims and an optional carbon fiber package.
Rounding out its list of updates is the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package, which equips the model with options typically limited to Mercedes-Benz‘s V8 range of vehicles. The pack offers a “RACE” drive program with a drift mode function, as well as updates such as an AMG Performance steering with redesigned performance buttons, and red-painted AMG-branded brake callipers.
