Springwatch: Chris Packham's step-daughter is a hit with fans as she makes debut
by Abigail GillibrandChris Packham’s step-daughter Megan McCubbin has made her Springwatch debut.
The nature show returned to BBC2 this week, with a slightly different setup following the coronavirus outbreak.
But while the cast and crew get used to their social distanced ‘new normal’, Chris thought he’d introduce Megan to the fandom, and she has gone down a treat.
‘Now I have been self-isolating in the forest for the past nine weeks with my step-daughter Megan McCubbin,’ the proud parent beamed as they perched under a tree together.
‘Here, a fine young zoologist has been helping me out with Self Isolation Bird Club, but hasn’t done very much washing up.’
However, the 25-year-old’s banter was on fire, as she teased: ‘You can identify 46 UK ladybirds, but you don’t know where the saucepan lives!’
They then went onto discuss their favourite bird song, while trolling their co-presenter Iolo Williams on his bright pink jumper.
‘I think they’re saying, “Where has Iolo Williams got his wardrobe from on Springwatch?”‘ the 59-year-old laughed when joking about what a flock of birds might be thinking.
Megan joined in, adding: ‘I think we’re all thinking that if I’m being totally honest!’
Fans were quick to comment on the newcomer’s appearance when taking to Twitter during the show – and they’re already in love.
‘Erm, anyone else thinking what I’m thinking about Megan!? She’s a flipping natural at this!! Sign her up!!!!’ one wrote while another added: ‘Chris’s stepdaughter Megan is a natural. Permanent presenter please.’
Someone else also called for her to become a Springwatch regular: ‘Great to see Megan! Make her a constant team member!’
Others told Chris to ‘step aside’ adding: ‘There’s a new Sheriff in town.’
The show made its grand return on Monday night, with Chris making an emotional speech about the current global pandemic.
‘This is a year like no other we’ve ever encountered,’ he began. ‘Everyone is having to adapt to unprecedented times.
‘People are grieving, struggling, and battling with the most tragic situations that they will ever encounter in their lives. This series is not to take away from any of these realities.’
The nature guru continued: ‘But there is one thing that has happened this year that has offered solace to everyone – a real message of hope. The power, the therapy, the existence of the natural world.’
Springwatch continues Thursday 8pm on BBC2.
