Despite the economic slowdown resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, there is one bright spot: pickup truck sales. As we previously learned, truck sales have actually increased over the past couple of months which, in turn, has created a nationwide shortage on dealership lots. It's not exactly a terrible problem to have, but demand is demand and automakers need to get production up and running again. This national truck-buying spree has also given GM a brilliant idea that'll benefit thousands of customers.

Cars Direct has uncovered a dealership bulletin quietly sent out last Friday announcing a plan to freeze current deals and incentives from Chevy and GMC in order to prevent people from missing out due their desire truck currently being unavailable.

Why is it the customer's fault when a certain Chevy Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500 is out of stock and, therefore, they can't take advantage of the numerous offers? The obvious answer is that it's not.

So, how can potential buyers take advantage of this program? The main thing is to communicate with a dealership by placing an order and take delivery within 30 days of the truck's arrival. Seems fair enough, however, there are a few things interested parties should know.

First off, the program is for light-duty trucks only, meaning the midsize Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon twins are not eligible. The same goes for the Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD and its respective GMC counterparts. Another important factor you should know is that this program favors buying over leasing.

Take the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab's current deal, for example. Chevy has an offer of 0 percent APR for 84 months or a $6,000 rebate. Lastly, this offer won't last for much longer. At present, it's set to expire on June 1, though it's certainly possible this could be extended. This will really all depend on how fast GM can start up production once again in order to boost inventory.

But, for those looking for a bargain on a new 2020 light-duty pickup truck from General Motors, hesitating is probably the last thing you should be doing.
