Tottenham call-off contract talks as defender nears La Liga switch

Tottenham have abandoned contract talks with Jan Vertonghen as he nears a switch to Real Betis, according to reports.

Vertonghen is in the final weeks of his contract at Spurs and is expected to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

The 33-year-old had previously been linked with a move to Inter Milan as Antonio Conte looks to improve his defence but according to Todofichajes, the club have now stopped negotiations with the defender as they believe he is closing in on a move to Real Betis.

The report claims that Betis are willing to sanction a two-year deal with a salary worth €3.5million per year (roughly £60,000 a week) in order to land the Belgian.

Mourinho discusses Tottenham transfers

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has discussed the impact the coronavirus will have on transfers as well as his attempts to prepare for Manchester United.

The veteran coach has predicted a very different transfer market this summer, with the ‘crazy numbers’ that were previously involved a thing of the past.

“I think it’s normal that we’re going to have a different market," Mourinho explained to Sky Sports.

“I don’t see the world and especially the football world, ready for some crazy numbers that we are used to having and the crazy investments that some clubs and some leagues are used to doing.

“The first question after that is when will be the transfer window? I don’t think it will be in July or August, I think it has to go back further than that, but my club, if you ask me what I want, I know it’s going to be sensible, it’s going to be balanced, it’s not going to spend rivers of money and we're trying to respect the situation not just of football but in the world and society overall."

Mourinho provides huge Tottenham injury update ahead of Project Restart

The Premier League is edging closer to a return, and that could be to Tottenham’s benefit.

Titled ‘Project Restart’, the 20 participating teams will vote on a return to group training on Wednesday, with a view to eventually reintroducing the remaining fixtures.

The almost three-month absence has given Spurs a chance to rehabilitate some of their injured stars, including Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

And Mourinho confirmed his squad had received a full bill of health as the Premier League nears a return.

“I cannot say in this moment they are ready to play because one thing is to recover from an injury and another thing is to recover to play football,” the Spurs boss told Sky Sports.

“In Harry's case it's five months since he played a football match, but all of them are not injured any more. Harry Kane, Son, Bergwijn, Sissoko, all of them are fine.

"With a couple of weeks of normal training when the authorities tell us we can train normally, the boys will be ready to play, of course not in the maximum of their potential, nobody can do that, but they will be ready to go.

"Everybody's fit now."
