The Last of Us Part 2 kills off the last living PlayStation Vita owner

Vita means death

by

An unexpected cameo showed up in Naughty Dog’s gameplay reveal of The Last of Us Part 2 on Wednesday: the PlayStation Vita, which has somehow managed to survive well into the year 2038. Regrettably, the last remaining Vita owner to survive the mutant Cordyceps fungus has been killed by Ellie, who viciously stabbed its owner in the neck.

In terms of product placement, it’s a good nod to the only system capable of playing Uncharted: Golden Abyss, though the lengthy State of Play gameplay segment shows that people in the future are playing Hotline Miami (which is on sale right now on PS4, and cross-buy compatible with the Vita) instead. Perhaps they just can’t get enough mass slaughter in real life, and are looking for a digital fix. The Vita’s cameo is a rare moment of humor (of sorts) in a grim and graphically violent new look at The Last of Us Part 2, which is replete with people being stabbed, shot, maimed, and hanged.

Naughty Dog does have a track record of good Sony product placement. The developer also worked in a PlayStation cameo (with Crash Bandicoot) in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
