‘Only a question of time’: Sky Sports pundit names the Liverpool fan favourite he thinks will return

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that it’s “only a question of time” before Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will take the Anfield reins after Jurgen Klopp.

Gerrard made a total of 710 appearances across 17 seasons for Liverpool, lifting three League Cups, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup, the European Super Cup and the Champions League, the latter especially notable given their heroic comeback from 3-0 down against Milan in 2005.

The 39-year-old left Liverpool in 2015 for a stint over the pond at LA Galaxy before hanging up his boots in November 2016 and returned to Merseyside just months later, taking the job of Reds youth coach.

In the summer of 2018, Gerrard became manager of Rangers, and he has set about turning the Ibrox side into an outfit challenging for the Scottish Premiership title again, as well as getting them into the last 16 of the Europa League this term.

Klopp has previously stated his desire for Gerrard to one day succeed him in the Anfield hot-seat, and Redknapp believes it is only a matter of time before that happens.

“Stevie is in Scotland and doing well,” the ex-Liverpool midfielder and Sky Sports pundit said on The Lockdown Tactics podcast. “Yes, it’s not easy because Celtic are so strong.

“But Stevie has got it [as a manager], you can see that. I think after a few years at Rangers, and as long as he doesn’t make too many mistakes, it’s only a question of time before he manages Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp decides to go.”

TBR View:

Gerrard has carved his name into Liverpool folklore for his heroics in the famous red shirt, and though it probably won’t be for quite a few years, it would be great to see him in the Anfield dugout, continuing the great work Klopp has carried out.

Admittedly, he’s not had the best of seasons at Rangers, their post-restart domestic collapse having cost them dear, but let’s not forget how difficult the job is and how little margin of error there is with a title rival like Celtic.

That said, Rangers’ strongest XI is on par with that of their rivals, and surely it won’t be long before Gerrard puts together a team which can finally overcome Celtic en route to title number 55.
