Last time, when we watched the Crawley clan it was in the Downton Abbey. Picking up in 1927, shortly after the TV finale, the Crawleys were frantically reading for a lavish dinner. The last scene takes us to a clandestine gay club where a rowdy group of men are deliriously dancing the ‘Black Bottom’. It’s easily the movie’s liveliest scene, and the most surprising, not least because the north of England in the 1920s was hardly a gay haven.

Following this pattern, Downton Abbey’s new projects might take you to the old sweet days but will also give you the surprise of changing times.
