by ET BureauNew Delhi: The SC issued notices on a petition which sought to halt the delimitation exercise for assembly and parliamentary seats in Assam. The process has been set in motion by a Presidential notification issued on February 28, 2020. A bench led by CJI SA Bobde issued notices after hearing senior advocate Kapil Sibal who argued that the exercise was being conducted in haste. He expressed fear that the exercise may spark off violent protests in the state. The petition was filed by advocate Fuzail Ahmad Ayyubi. The petition argued that the exercise, which had been put off earlier, was being resumed after 10 years on the basis of the 2001 outdated census. The process was deferred by a notification issued in February 2008 but it was overruled by the Presidential notification.
